I've emailed them with the question, and never gotten a response.
Also, I've asked the person that I order film from in the Motion Picture Imaging dept. and they don't know the answer.
So I don't know who to ask at this point!.

If the Pro 8mm carts aren't notched how do you set the film's ASA if you can't do it manually?
Or are there only a few top of the line cameras that allow you to set the film's speed?

Hi Chas!
I doesn't matter if the camera can set the ASA manually. What matters is if you can set the exposure manually. If you use a hand meter, then the camera's "ASA notch reader" is really redundant. Just take a reading with a hand meter and then set the camera manually to what ever exposure you need for the film you're using. The camera will ignore the notches in that mode.

Kodak is sending my info to set up an account to buy film.
I'm going to get a couple cartridges of 200T to test on my next shoot.
I'll post the answer to the mystery, regarding whether there is a notch or not.

A guy I know who works on commercials just gave me -- literally handed me -- a bag full of Pro 8mm carts. I must have about 50 -- all sitting in my closet useless because I can't manually set the camera's speed -- also I don't/can't afford to RANK everything I shoot. Anyone want to trade for Plus-X and Kodachrome?

They are only "useless" if you do not have manual exposure control.
If you have manual exposure control on your camera, just set each shot manually.
There is also a technique called "offset" that can solve your problem.
You mount your camera on a tripod, and point it at an object that won't change in light intensity.
Next you put in a K-40 roll, and take an automatic reading....then you put in a roll of the unnotched cartridges, and take a reading.
What you are doing is establishing an offset relationship between a known quantity and an unknown quantity.
If you consistently notice that the unnotched cartridges are 2 f-stops different than the K-40, you now have an "offset" from which to work from.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By the way, the simplest of all metering approaches that will pretty much render a decent result is to zoom in on a caucasian or asian face that is in the shot you will be shooting, take an automatic exposure reading, then overexpose by one stop.
If the face you zoomed in on is in shadow, that will mess up the results, but this still is a good starting point for many situations.

Keith at Yale says the notch on the 200T cartridge "looks like" the notch on Kodak's Tri-X BW, which I think is also 200 ASA.

You can shoot without notches, on any camera, you just can't use the cameras internal meter, that's all.
You would just set your external light meter to ASA200, take a reading, & set your camera to that.
Of course, we've already discussed the problems with S8 cameras stealing light for the viewfinder elsewhere on this board....
